WHS Science & Ecology Club Field Trip

The High School Science and Ecology Club travelled to Dukett's Doe Run and Educations Works today (10/19/22) to learn about invasive species plant removal. Scott Lamer, a forester with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources met with the group there to talk about invasive species and effective removal techniques. The students then trekked over to the trailhead for Scott to demonstrate how to best trim and treat the plants. Working in groups of five the students were given equipment and hit the trails removing bush honeysuckle, autumn olive, and rose hawthorn. They then acted as trail stewards replacing some of the faded tree species identification cards and picking up sticks and debris along the trails. The day was finished around a campfire where they enjoyed hot dogs and smores.
