Students in my Physics class listened to guest speaker Corey Mason talk about his extensive knowledge of bridge engineering. Mason is a Winchester High School alum and is a professional engineer (PE) and structural engineer (SE) with Hutchinson Engineering of Jacksonville, Illinois. He also shared some tips with students who may want to pursue a degree in engineering, as well as brought some examples of his work (including hand-written calculations for structures that he has been working on).

Students have been learning about the different types of bridges, their construction members, and the forces acting on such structures. They have been tasked with building a model of a pre-designed pratt truss bridge out of manila folders. Bridges will then be tested in the near future for strength in a friendly competition.
