Letter to the Winchester Community
June 25, 2019
Dear Winchester Community Members:
As we end the 2019 fiscal school year, I am retiring after 35 years in education, spending the last 11 as superintendent of the Winchester School District. It has been my pleasure to serve you and lead our district forward.
Little did we know when I started in 2008 that the Great Recession, which greatly impacted our economy, would also be devastating to K-12 education. We endured funding cuts, prorated state aid, and delayed payments. We had to reduce spending which meant releasing some employees and cutting some expenditures. However, we persevered and are slowly building back some reserves.
Through this unstable funding period we have been able to hire quality personnel, build the Early Learning Center, and renovate Winchester Grade School. We have also had great support from PAT, Cougar/Winchester Boosters, and many volunteers who have made curriculum and facility improvements which we could not do alone.
I feel good about the future of our school district. It will continue to provide a quality, well-rounded education with many electives and extra-curricular offerings for our children. I am glad I was a part of it! Thank you for your support and please continue to be involved in our schools.
Peace,
David C. Roberts
Superintendent of Winchester CUSD #1
