Save a Life Tour

On Thursday, April 25, Winchester High School students participated in the Save a Life Tour (SALT) Pre-Prom Program.  The SALT program is a comprehensive, high-impact safe driving awareness program that informs, educates, and demonstrates the potentially deadly consequences resulting from poor choices and decisions made by the operator of a motor vehicle.  Safe driving is especially emphasized around the time of high school prom because students are often more tempted than usual to drive distracted or impaired, particularly late at night during this time.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), one in three teens who text have done so while driving and texting while driving increases a teen's risk of crashing by 23 times.  Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that teens are more likely than anyone else to be killed in an alcohol-related crash.  The SALT Program uses a combination of speakers/visual presentations, distracted and impaired driving simulators, demonstrations, corrective action, and dissemination of current statistics and fact based information to address the problem head on.
