WINCHESTER CHATTER - ISSUE #6 - Friday, January 16, 2015 - DAY 7 - ISSUE #6

Liberty and Greenfield-Northwestern have not played here. The Eagles have won eight of their 10 meetings with Greenfield. Those two teams last met here in 2005 with Liberty winning 60-50.

Liberty last reached the fifth place game in 1998. Greenfield-Northwestern has not reached the fifth place game, but Greenfield last played in the contest in 1994.

North Greene and Calhoun played here last year with the Spartans coming away with a 68-56 win in the consolation championship game. North Greene reached the fifth place game in 2011 while Calhoun played in the game in 2009.

Carrollton and Griggsville-Perry have split two prevous games this season. Griggsville Perry won the first game in the Carrollton Holiday tournament 66-58, and Carrollton won the second, regular season game 66-63.

Carrollton and Griggsville-Perry played in the fifth place game here last year. The Hawks came away with a 41-40 overtime victory. This is the seventh meeting between the two schools in the tournament in the last 11 years with three of those games being decided in overtime. Griggsville-Perry's last win against Carrollton came here in 2012 as the Tornadoes prevailed 71-67 in overtime.

Carrollton is trying to reach the championship game for the first time since 2010. Griggsville-Perry last reached the title game in 2000.

This year’s tournament has been remarkably absent of many upsets. There have been only two in the first 22 games. Back in 2008, there were just 3 upsets in the Winchester Invitational Tournament. And, there were just three upsets in 2001.

One more reminder for coaches to turn in their all tournament ballots. Please do so by halftime of the 3rd place game tomorrow. Return to Jeff Abell, Denny Vortman or the WEAI broadcast position at the north end of the band room. You can also text to 370-9058, or e mail to gscott@wlds.com.

Two players have posted the points to beat in this year’s tournament. Taylor Hiemann of Payson, and Matt Muller of Porta/AC have set the bar at 49 points, as we head to the final 7 games of the tournament. Three other players have scored in the 40s. Defense is the name of the game for the 2015 Winchester Invitational Tournament.

The orchestrator of the music between games and at halftime is Jeff Abell. Blame no one else for one hit wonders, disco inferno, and 80s hair bands, some of the themes that he is offering. .
