WLDS/WEAI - CHATTER for Wednesday, Jan 14th

WINCHESTER CHATTER - ISSUE #4 - Wednesday, January 14, 2015 - DAY 5 - ISSUE #4

Quick correction to yesterday’s Chatter. A rare, and I mean rare, mistake by Kent Coultas has Carrollton and North Greene last playing in the Winchester Invitational Tournament in 2001. That’s a misprint. The year was 2011.Carrollton has won the last five meetings now with North Greene in the tournament. North Greene's last win against Carrollton in the tournament was in the 2001 semifinals.

Rushville-Industry and Western, and Routt and West Central have never played each other in the tournament.

That’s not to say the schools have met each other in different forms..Routt versus Bluffs or Winchester, and Rushville against Barry. However, a check of the records shows that Rushville has never played Barry, when it was only Barry. But, West Pike stopped Rushville 62-57 in the first round of the 1999 tournament. West Pike is part of the Western consolidation. Barry is the other part. Routt last played Winchester, a part of the West Central co-op in the first round of the 1984 tournament, won by Winchester 57-39.

This will be at least the second time that Calhoun and Griggsville-Perry have played the season. They played at the Carrollton Christmas Tournament, and Calhoun came away with a 77-76 win. The last time these programs met at Winchester was in 2009, when Calhoun stopped Griggsville Perry in the 5th place game 64-62. The two teams have split the four games prior to this year’s tournament. Calhoun also won in 2001. Griggsville Perry won in 2004 and 2007.

No upsets through three days and 13 games. This is the longest stretch of no upsets at the start of a Winchester Invitational Tournament since 2011, when it went to the 16th game before Liberty upset Carrollton. The tourney ended with 5 upsets that year, or 5 out of the last 10 games.

Camp Point’s Taylor Heimann became the 2nd player this year to score 30 or more points in a game at the WIT. Heimann had 30 last night in the win over Pleasant Hill. He now has 36 for the tournament, putting him four behind the current tourney leader Drew Burwinkel of Payson, who has 40 points. Michael Mast of Liberty, and Matt Muller of Porta/AC are all ahead of Heimann on the scoring list this year.

A belated congratulation to Manning Plater of Rushville-Industry. He scored 18 points Saturday, the first of which was his 1-thousandth point in his career. Winchester Invitational Tournament officials stopped the game to recognize Plater’s achievement. We know of a handful of players in this tourney with 1-thousand or more. But, we are reluctant to name these players for fear of leaving someone out. Don’t hesitate to share with us some of the names as the tournament continues.

We lost one team from the field of this year’s Winchester Invitational Tournament in the AP polls this week. Liberty is no long among the teams receiving votes in the Class 1A boys’ poll. But, Payson and Carrollton remain on that list. And, Porta/AC has climbed a spot in the 2A boys’ poll. Porta/AC is now rated 7th.

Have we passed our only weather threat of the tournament? We usually get dumped on at least one night or day. But the weather the rest of the week calls for a gradual rise, into the low 50s Saturday. Let’s hope the weatherman hits his mark.
