Winchester CUSD #1 Monthly Newsletter

January 2, 2015

The Winchester Board of Education has approved placing the County School Facilities 1% Sales Tax Resolution on the April 7th Election Ballot.  Information will be available in the next several months to better inform taxpayers on the County Sales Tax.

Congratulations to the Winchester Wolverines 8th Grade Girls Basketball Team as they finished their season with a perfect 27-0 record and an IESA 2A State Basketball Championship!

Our West Central Co-Op Committee met at Bluffs on November 19th.  To clear up some misunderstanding, the committee recommended that each board approve competitive cheer competition as an extension of the cheerleading program with no district funding provided.  We agreed to present fall head coaches for approval in December.  We plan to meet again on March 18, 2015.

Our RIF Joint Committee met on November 24th to review possible changes in the teacher evaluation procedure.  This committee is made up of three teachers and the three administrators.  Consensus was reached on all five questions we needed to review.  No changes were made.

I attended the Grain Belt Express Open House on Dec. 4th at the Nimrod-Funk Building.  The proposed electrical transmission line will go from western Kansas to eastern Illinois with 3 route options through our area.  Only one option being considered would go through our district just north of the Greene County line.  The other two options are both in Greene County.

Our Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity (DCEO) Lighting Project is progressing with some work being completed during winter break.  Lights in the Wood Shop, Auto Shop, Home Ec. Room, and the Ag Shop & Classroom have been upgraded to high efficient LED lighting at WHS.  The pole lights in the WGS parking lot have also been replaced with LED lighting.

The total income from the district farmland this fall was $7,768.97.  Winchester FFA Farm Manager Cole Parker presented a check to the district for $3,884.49 at the December School Board meeting.  We appreciate the Winchester FFA & Cole’s work on the farmland.

Mrs. Jeannie Fearneyhough has been granted approval to organize Cougars Care.  Cougars Care is a mentoring program that will pair K-5 students with a WHS student similar to Big Brothers/Big Sisters.  Cougars Care will begin in late January or early February.
