Winchester CUSD #1 Monthly Newsletter

The 2014-15 school year will begin on Wednesday, August 20th for students.  This will be preceded by two teacher institute days on August 18th & 19th.  We will have 2:15pm school dismissal from August 20th-29th.  Registration will be August 4th & 5th will times listed in articles on the district website.

We have several new employees joining our school district this year.  They are:  Ms. Jamie Daws – speech therapist, Mr. Ryan Jefferson – WGS physical education teacher, Mr. Alex Ebbing – WHS physical education teacher, Ms. Laura Messenger – WHS English & social studies teacher, and Darin Buhlig – WGS secretary.

The new WGS playground was built in less than six hours on July 18th!  We had an incredible turn out of very talented volunteers from the community.  Two phases of this project were funded through PAT fundraising over the past several years with the third/final phase to be completed next summer.

Other summer projects nearing completion are:  rubber mulch for playgrounds, removal of old floor tile in the WGS band room & WHS Ag classroom, WGS bathroom partitions replaced, removal of old football bleachers, refurbishing of all WHS stairs, additional security cameras added, and WHS masonry work.

We are still waiting on our DCEO lighting project to begin due to late approval and product shipment.  Our IEMA school safety grant for a security upgrade at the WGS main entrance is set to begin soon with completion before school begins.

Technology update:  WGS teachers will be receiving new desktop computers, teachers will also be able to purchase a laptop through payroll deduction this year, and we hope to have a new layout/design for our district website before school starts.

The following motions were approved at the July 21st Special School Board Meeting:

  1. Accepted the retirement notice from Albert Short (& payment for 13 unused sick days) and the resignation letter from Kady Fairfield.

  2. Employed Ms. Laura Messenger as WHS English/SS teacher.

  3. Volunteer co-op assistant coaches:Jodie DeGroot – JH sball, Michael Mercier – JH bball, & Jeff Davis – WC golf.

  4. Job descriptions – revised:athletic director & school bus driver; newly developed:lead bus driver, transportation coordinator, & mechanic/district maintenance/bus driver.
