July Superintendent Newsletter

Winchester CUSD #1 Monthly Newsletter

June 30, 2014

Jason Wolters has been approved for a $7,250.00 Illinois Arts Council Grant for study & evaluation of needs.  There will be a second phase of the grant that could be much more funding and would be used to implement planned improvements!

Several of our grant funded projects are moving slow for a variety of reasons.  The lighting project is still on hold as we are waiting approval on the DCEO Incentive Program.  Some of the projects are waiting on vendor quotes that have not been returned.  Our School & Campus Safety Grant has been formally approved but we can’t do anything until July 1st.

We had four students considered for retention this year under our revised retention/promotion policies.  One senior will need to complete a correspondence class before receiving his/her diploma.  One 8th grade student was retained.  One 6th grade & one 7th grade student were both promoted with interventions established for additional help.

Crockett Masonry Restoration will be restoring damaged mortar and tuck pointing the north & east sides of the high school this summer along with minor work at the grade school.  Health, Life, Safety funds will cover this work.

The following motions were approved at the June 17th School Board Meeting:

  1. FY14 Amended Budget after public hearing.

  2. Annual designation of banks, board counsel, & treasurer; establish FY15 Regular Meeting schedule; Re-affirm District Policy Manual & Student/Parent Handbooks; & adopt Prevailing Wage Resolution.

  3. Purchase of K-6 Math Series from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

  4. Use of facilities by J. Dorsey Training Class & 2014 Youth Football.

  5. Summer Employment – Donna Lawrence (bus driver), Carolyn Schofield (bus monitor), Dylan Guthrie (grounds), & Mike McHugh (custodial).

  6. Coaches – Ashley Stevens (WCC Vball Asst.), Brady Slagle (WCC Boys Basketball Asst.), Candy Wagner (WGS Sball & WCC Softball Head), Justin Vinyard (WGS Girls Basketball Asst.), Dena Walker (District Athletic Director), & Bill Jacuot (WCC Boys Freshmen Basketball Volunteer).

  7. WGS Secretary – Darin Buhlig.

I hope everyone is enjoying summer!
