April Superintendent Newsletter

Winchester CUSD #1 Monthly Newsletter

March 28, 2014

I have recommended over $250,000.00 in expenditure reductions and an estimated $50,000.00 in revenue increases for next year at the March Board Meeting.  This meant that some additional employees were reduced to part-time along with our annual reduction-in-force list.  Only employee decisions were made at the March Board Meeting.  The reductions and increases will be discussed further and possibly voted on at the April Board Meeting.

Our short spring break will start today (3-28-14) at 2:15pm with only Monday, March 31st as a day off.  April 1st-4th will be make-up days for emergency days used this year.  We will also be in attendance on Monday, April 21st (Easter Monday).  Our only other day off for the rest of the school year is Friday, April 18th (Good Friday).  The last day of student attendance is May 22nd which is also 8th Grade Promotion Night.  WHS Graduation is Friday, May 23rd.

We will be recommending changes in over-the-counter medicine disbursement for next school year.  Nurse Debbie Rhoades recently attended a meeting where this was discussed.  This means that parents will need to have their doctor’s permission for our schools to be able to dispense both prescription and over-the-counter medication.  A new form is in the works.

Morgan County has had several cases of mumps reported but none in Scott County yet.  Nurse Rhoades is sending letter to all students who have vaccination waivers that they will not be able to attend school for a period of time if we have any cases of mumps in our school community.  We are working with the Scott County Health Department on procedures with employees as well.

I have applied for a Round 2 School Maintenance Project Grant.  Our application was solely for the Energy Efficiency Lighting Program that we tabled at the February Board Meeting.  This is also a $50,000 matching grant but we could get $25,000-$30,000 in incentive paybacks.

The following motions were approved at the March 11th School Board Meeting:

  • IHSA/IESA Membership Renewal & 6th Grade Volleyball Use-of-Facilities
  • Dismissal of Marty Perry (1st year teacher) & Joe Cody (maintenance/custodian)
  • Tenure granted – Blayre Scott, Rachel Flynn, & Laura Radliff
