Mrs. Slagle, More Than a Lunch Lady Here at Winchester High School we have plenty of teachers, but who helps out in the lunch department. The kind person who serves us food is none other than Mrs. Slagle. Mrs. Slagle is retired but is kind enough to work as nutrition coordinator at WHS. She really enjoys the kids and her job that she performs on a daily basis. Most of the students here like Mrs. Slagle as well. There is a lot more to Mrs. Slagle than just her job though. A little bit about Mrs. Slagles past is, she has lived in the Scott County area for seventy years. She has one husband and three children who have given her eleven grandchildren and one great grandson that she adores. She graduated from high school but didn't continue to college. Some of her hobbies are that she loves to read, raise chickens, and her eleven grandchildren who are spoiled rotten. This is just a small glimpse into the life of Mrs. Slagle. by Ryan Thompson

The Winchester Tournaments: Boys
The boys’ basketball game was a tight game. In the last second Liberty made a shot and tied the game 50-50. The boys went into 4 minutes of overtime. Liberty made the last shot form the three point line and won the game 50-59. The boys played their hardest. They lost as a team but that’s ok because that’s ll we could ever ask for. 92nd Winchester Tournament
Mrs. McLaughlin the FCCA (the Home EC teacher) here at WHS, is one of the people in charge for the cheerleaders room for the 92nd Winchester Tournament. The tournaments take place down at the grade school, in the gym. The room for the other team is where the cheerleaders go.
This room is chosen when a teacher doesn’t mind their room being moved around, having a ton of teenagers and having food in there. This room is for the other team to put their bags. The cheerleaders make sure everyone’s stuff is left alone, and makes sure the room is not unattended. They bring snacks for the other team, so the cheerleaders have to make sure the food is up to date and stocked.

The Winchester Tournaments: Girls The girls’ basketball game was the best game I have ever been to. Win or loses they stick together as a team. They are friends on and off the court; they have a great time playing and they do such a great job playing as a team. They may have lost the game but they lost as a team. The girls did their best and they had fun doing it. The girls did a great job playing. Good luck girls in all your games to come. By Brittany Ehlenbeck
Why we shouldn’t have school on Martin Luther King Jr. day We shouldn’t have school on Martin Luther King Jr. day because all federal buildings, state buildings, banks, and some schools are closed. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is holiday that celebrates the unification of whites and blacks. His famous speech “I Had a Dream” inspired millions of black people. They started the Civil Rights March Movement and millions of people not even just black people. White people joined the march as they went down the streets of Washington DC. Now for the first time in sixteen years, we have school on Martin Luther King Jr Day. We should not have school because some people think that it is racist (a person who believes that a particular race is superior to another.). It helped the black people to have more rights like the right to vote, the right to no slavery, the right to be with the whites such as they can eat in the same restaurants they drink out the same water fountains, and they can use the same restrooms. What Students Do When Their Out of School
During school students are eager for Friday to come around, so they don’t have to be in school for 2 more days. Several students enjoy school because they don’t have anything to do outside of school and homework. Others want to get out and have fun. Some teenagers have jobs, friends to hang out with, and/or chores to get done so they can go do things with friends. Some stay at home and baby sit and have friends come over to hang out. A student such as Brittany Ehlenbeck is new to Winchester High School and doesn’t know many people or her way around town so she stays at home and sleeps. When teens are grounded and can’t leave they usually clean the house and cook.
Summer time is what every student at WHS is always waiting for. Teenagers enjoy going to the movies, staying up late. Vacations are always the fun part, you get to get out of the state and get to enjoy life. Others work, go to concerts and stay with friends and family. By Brooke Bartmann Scholastic Bowl By Maura Barfield The Winchester Scholastic Bowl team has a lot to ‘buzz’ about. They have been to AC Central, Pittsfield, and Routt so far this season and competed against AC Central, Pittsfield, Routt, North Greene, and Triopia. The junior varsity team has a record of 2-1 while the varsity’s is 3-2. They were supposed to be going to Brown County on Thursday, January 23rd, however the match was cancelled due to cold weather. The team will go to Triopia on Monday, January 27th. Scholastic Bowl matches consist of twenty toss-up questions. When you get a toss-up question correct, there is a three part bonus question. Each correct answer is worth ten points. There are typically around five or six teams at each match. Junior varsity matches and varsity matches are separate. Junior varsity was just added within the last couple of years. Coach Candy Miller says, “Having a JV team is a nice addition because my younger players get a chance to gain experience before they are actually a part of the varsity team.” Seniors on the team include Ben Fletcher, Victoria Miller, and Kara Shafer. The juniors are Logan Young, Rachel Hill, and Jacob Grubb. Sophomores include Michelle Brown, Noah Sellars, and Reese Fowler, and Hannah Schafer and Anita Moore are the only two freshmen. They are coached by Candy Miller.
