Mrs. Niffen is Winchester High School’s librarian. Her niece Lindsay DeMoss works for PBS in Texas. She is the producer of Daytripper. It’s currently filming the fifth season which will premiere on October second. She started working on the show during season two as an Associate Editor. She has moved on to being Producer and Music Supervisor for the show. As a producer her job is to set up the entire shoot. She schedules everything and makes contacts with all locations. She works with the editor to find music for the show, which the songs are only Texas artists.  The show has been nominated for numerous Lonestar Emmy Awards including outstanding Texas Heritage Program (2wins), Outstanding Magazine program (1win) and editing. She got started in film when her boyfriend needed an actor for a short film. She wrote a script for another one of his film projects and helped him produce it. She liked it so much that she decided she wanted to take a class, and then she eventually got her degree in Film-making.

The Wisest of Them All

Mrs. Haney and Mr. Quigg are the two teachers that have been at Winchester High School the longest. Mr. Quigg has been a teacher at Winchester for thirty years. Mrs. Haney has been at Winchester for thirty-one years, thirty-three counting her two years of teaching at Ashland. She graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor in Science. Then, she went to get her Masters at Sangamon State which is now University of Illinois at Springfield. She has also taken classes and workshops at SIUe, Western, and ISU. She started teaching in Ashland in 1981 then started teaching in Winchester in 1983. Mrs. Haney has taught numerous classes from sixth, seventh, eighth grade math, and seventh grade life science and high school biology classes. She has taught chemistry and physics. She alternated those classes every other year with her biology classes before Mrs. Dukett started working at Winchester. Mrs. Haney said she stayed in Winchester because it was close to her home, and she enjoyed having the same schedule as her children when they were in school. One year, Mrs. Haney taught Algebra and Pre-Algebra at Winchester. Mrs. Haney plans to retire after next year.

Mr. Quigg also attended Western to earn his teaching degree. He attended Spoon River to earn his welding degree; he attends Lincoln Land for his workshops and recertification. Mr. Quigg started working at Winchester High School in 1984. He has always taught the same classes besides the few that have been added to his schedule. Mr. Quigg stated he has stayed here so long because he is used to the community, and it is where he went to high school. He also enjoys that he is familiar with everyone. Mr. Quigg plans on retiring in two to three years. Both teachers are great mentors and leaders for the Winchester School District. They will be greatly missed when they retire.

Halloween Costumes as a kid

Trick or Treat; smell my feet; give me something good to eat..! Halloween is just around the corner and is a kid’s favorite time of the year, besides Christmas of course. Halloween is the time of the year to dress up in the best costume in town and go out to every house and get those big candy bars, popcorn balls, etc. I went around WHS and asked students what their favorite Halloween costumes were as a kid. Some responses I got were…

Kayden Savage said, “My Cinderella costume my mother made me because my mom spent a lot of time making it for me, and it is one of my favorite princesses.”

Kaylie Horrer said, Banana in Pajamas was hers.

Jared Carriger said his ghost was his favorite when he was a kid.

Shentell Baker said her witch costume was her favorite.

What animal would you be?

by Brayton Smith

If I could be any animal I would be the meerkat. I want to be a meerkat because they are small fast and will stand up to a cobra. Eagles and other big birds eat meerkats.

Meerkats eat lizard’s snakes and other insects. Meerkats all sleep together and they live under the ground. They dig holes down deep they have more than one entry way in case of predators.

If you could be any animal, what would you be???

Kaylie Horrer would be a White Tiger because they are very pretty and are good hunters. If she were a White Tiger she would not be scared of anything, because she would be tough and could take on anything and anyone. She would kill just about anything to feed. She would live in present day Southern Asia, because she would have all the freedom she wanted. If she lived there she would kill any animal/enemy that crossed her path and made her feel threatened

.

Austin Summers would be a Spider Monkey, because he would be able to swing from tree to tree and climb on things. The only thing he would be scared of is clowns…yes clowns, because who isn’t afraid of clowns? He would live in the present in a cave in the country. He would live there because he could climb tree to tree, out windows and on top of the school.

Brooke Bartmann- “In my opinion I would be a house kitten, because they are cute and get a lot of attention. I would be fed and take care of like I’m supposed to, and I wouldn’t have to do it, because people now a days adore kittens. The only thing I would be scared of would be feet and dogs. I would be scared of feet because I’d be scared I get stepped on, and a dog, I’d be afraid it would get jealous and try hurting me, taking my food and attention away. I would want to live in the present in a big house with carpets and a heater, so I won’t be chilly when it got cold out. It would also be easier to run with carpet on the floors because I wouldn’t be sliding all over the place.”

If I Had Invented

If I had invented the Suzuki ltz 400 ATV, I would have made it a 6 speed not a 5. The 6th gear would make it have a lot better top end. It would also use less gas because it would not be pulling so hard up top. I would not have put a rev box on it “The rev box makes it shut down after a certain speed in that gear.  I would have made it fuel injected. I would have made it sit wider and would have it come out stock with a high compression piston. After all that, I would classify it as a quadracer instead of quadsport. I would have put a dry box on it so you could put your phone in it while driving in creeks and stuff.

IF I COULD HAVE INVENTED ANYTHING…

If I could have invented anything, I would have invented McDonalds before it was invented, because if I would have invented it first, I would have made sure everything was 100% meat, not soy. I would make sure it was healthier and not too greasy. I would do this because too many people now days are becoming obese and eating too much McDonalds. I would keep the ice cream the same, but the cones could be bigger than they are for $1.06. I would keep the parfaits, flurries, snack wraps, shakes, smoothies, frappes, mochas, cookies, and lattes the same.
I would have dedicated employees that would go out along the highway and interstate for 2 hours and pick up the McDonalds bags/trash off the roads, because every time I’m going down the road all I see is McDonalds trash. The employees that get out and do that would get paid extra, of course.
I would be sure that everything would be fresh when served. I’d be sure the people making the food would do things responsibly and carefully instead of carelessly while on the clock.  I would not hire anyone with a felony or anyone with drug charges. I also would not hire drop outs. Because if I hired these kinds of people, how am I to know they’ll show up on time, come to work sober and not steal things?

The Greatest Invention
By: Taylor Miller

Our world would not be what it is today if it was not for the iPhone. The iPhone has changed the way we communicate, the global aspect of the smartphone, and the way we go about our daily lives. If I could invent anything in the world it would be the iPhone. The iPhone set the smart phone data base. It triggered the main invention of the touch screen, expanding its popularity throughout America. The greatest aspect of inventing the iPhone would be the obvious; you would be rich and famous. If you ever broke your phone, you could just get a new one with no fee, not that the fee would matter because you are rich in the first place. Even though everyone would try to make their phones better, it wouldn’t happen because Apple is always creating new features and smarter phones. Without the iPhone, we would not go about our daily lives like we do. You would not be able to email, send pictures, play games, or have the mobile social life we do without the iPhone. The iPhone has created a new world. That is why I would invent it.

Meet Mrs Lashmett

Mrs. Celeste Lashmett, our school counselor, is a vegetarian. A vegetarian is a person who does not eat meat and, sometimes other animal products such as milk, cheese and eggs, for moral, religious, or health reasons. Mrs. Lashmett became a vegetarian in the 6th grade for Lent. Mrs. Lashmett is pregnant; so, she eats a lot of soy and veggie burgers and beans and lots of fruit for protein for the baby. Her brother is also a vegetarian.  He just started not too long ago. It is ironic that her husband is a big cattle farmer and she is a vegetarian.  She can eat fish but not pork beef or chicken.

Fist fighting or talking it out?????

Kaylie Horrer (16) started fighting at the age of 10. She prefers fist fighting over just talking something out because if you just talk it out, or tell them to stop, they won’t stop and you would sound like a wimp. Kaylie said, “When you start throwing punches and get them good they, will learn their lesson and learn not to mess with me anymore.”  Kaylie’s mother has caught her fighting and grounded her. Kaylie knows not to fight at school because she could get suspended. She would rather get grounded than suspended.

Katelyn Chavez (16) would rather talk it out than fist fight. She thinks throwing punches is ridiculous and immature. “You won’t make many friends doing so. If you talk it out then maybe you and that person will become friends.” “If you talk it out instead of fighting, you will make more friends because they would know you’re a nice person and not rude and willing to beat them up.” She would rather talk it out because if you fight, you will most likely get in trouble with your parents, their parents, teachers/principals, and even the police officers.

What Would Be Your Last Meal?
By: Taylor Miller

What would be your last meal? If you knew you were going to die tomorrow what would you choose for your last feast? When asked this question Mrs. Kuchy, the high school English teacher, answered with numerous homemade items. She said she would want her mother’s homemade fried chicken with mashed potatoes that had milk gravy on them. She also wanted corn and for dessert she wanted her mother’s homemade red velvet cake with a large glass of un-sweet tea.

When Mrs. Lashmett, the high school guidance counselor, and Mrs. Barnett, the high school History teacher, were asked the same question they both responded with similar answers. Mrs. Lashmett said she would want homemade spaghetti with no meat because she is a vegetarian, Italian bread, artichokes, tiramisu for dessert, and a huge bottle of smart water. Mrs. Barnett on the other hand also wanted spaghetti but she wanted it from a restaurant in The Hill in Saint Louis. The Hill is an Italian area with many Italian restaurants. She also wanted bread and salad from the restaurant. Mrs. Barnett, just like Mrs. Lashmett wanted tiramisu for dessert but she wanted a cup of coffee to drink instead of smart water.
